PoE is progressing so fast it does not even have full standards yet, though the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.commscope.com\/Blog\/Power-over-Ethernet-Latest-Developments\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IEEE) is scrambling to provide them. With the rising innovations coming in the Internet of Things (IoT), PoE is both an opportunity and a challenge. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>IoT<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Internet of Things is tomorrow\u2019s futuristic world <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">today<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Having a telephone that talks to your front door lock from your vacation home 1,000 miles away may seem like a far fetched plot line from<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/50-years-of-the-jetsons-why-the-show-still-matters-43459669\/?no-ist\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jetsons<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but the IoT allows this and more. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most IoT devices draw little power. PoE, with its promise of power levels up to 100W (IEEE 802.3BT), will allow cables and cable bundles to run power for a lot of new markets:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nurse call systems\u2014Typically 50W<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Point of sale readers and printers\u201430W to 60W<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial trade floor telephony\u201445W<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lighting fixtures, lighting controllers, and access controllers\u201440W to 50W range<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) terminals\u201450W<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thin Clients\u201450W<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Video conferencing&#8211;45W to 60W<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IP security cameras (with pan, tilt and zoom capability)\u201430W to 60W range<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brushless drives, motor control units\u2014Above 30W<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Opportunity<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daniel G. Walter, vice president and COO, National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), is<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecmag.com\/section\/systems\/taming-iot-interoperability-%E2%80%A8of-internet-power-gains-traction\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quoted in Electrical Contractor magazine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as saying, \u201cIn my opinion, there is a certain inevitability, and PoE should be viewed as an opportunity. There certainly is similarity with voice over internet protocol [VoIP] technology, so maybe the jump to PoE isn\u2019t so foreign a concept.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe integration of IoT, including increasing use of sensors for multiple purposes and components to transfer that sensor data, place electrical contractors (ECs) in an enviable position,\u201dsays Walter. \u00a0\u201cECs could help build the backbone and be the integrator for these building systems and the assortment of devices they will require.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is this opportunity worth?<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/50-years-of-the-jetsons-why-the-show-still-matters-43459669\/?no-ist\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">London-based Memoori<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a market research firm, pegs IoT for buildings at $85 billion by 2020. The three largest market segments:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical security<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lighting control<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fire detection and safety<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Added connectivity within building systems puts sensors, lighting and access controls all within the grasp of PoE. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Downsides?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For electrical contractors, much work still remains. Standards are still coalescing. The electrical system we have has taken over 100 years to reach a level of reliability and simplicity that comforts office workers and homeowners alike. With PoE, will homeowners tolerate having to reset basic lighting fixtures<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/luxreview.com\/article\/2016\/04\/what-nobody-tells-you-about-power-over-ethernet\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after a power outage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Will electrical contractors have redundancies and solutions to bring PoE to the same level of transparent technology as 120V outlets are today? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discounting the early adopters and novelty seekers who long to power their boss\u2019s coffee maker from across the cubicles, or who thrill to checking their vacation home\u2019s thermostat from the office, energy-saving, cost-saving future applications for the IoT are here:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electrical contractors can sell clients on the expanded sensor sampling opportunities for environmental and fire safety controls by having more objects read conditions more often<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retailers can harness internet-connected lighting to identify a shopper\u2019s location within a store, send a code to the smartphone, and identify to the customer promotions, catalog alternatives to store stock, and more<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information technology (IT) and cybersecurity specialists are reassured by PoE since cabling means physical connectivity, not wireless <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(read: easily hacked) <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">routers<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At one time not too long ago the internet itself was a brave frontier.
